Math 2
what is math 2?
Math 2 is my sophomore year of my math taught by Michael Carter. Through out this year I learned about quadratics, probability and similarity. As an experiment High Tech High changed the math grading system to promote mistakes. Instead of having your grades based on how many problems you got correct, it is based on how much work and revisions you completed. Changing the grading system freed me from any fears of failure; I was able to explore and try new methods without fear of having my grade drop. Through this experiment I was able to practice real world difficulties, such as; working in groups and using critical thinking.
POrtfolios
Quadratics portfolio
The link above is the first portfolio I created; in this portfolio I showed my progressed from learning how to factor to mastering the quadratic formula. I have worksheets scanned as examples and descriptions explaining how I have grown in each checkpoint of learning. It begins with factoring, then moving into parabolas and finally finishing with the quadratics quiz and group quiz.
Probability Portfolio
Through out this concept I completed many different types and lessons of probability; which means my portfolio consist mostly of worksheets. I choose six of the toughest problems to display and explane. My class and I became masters of probability and we were able to create a whole casino with original probability games.
similarity portfolio
The first concept I learned through this section was understanding the difference between similar triangles and polygons. I explane the different rules the shapes follow. For example, any triangle with two similar corresponding angles would still be similar even if the sides where different lengths. However, this rule doesn't hold true with polygons that have more than three sides. I also had to apply my growth mindset through out this particular segment.
Casino website link
This website I created kept track of all the struggles and accomplishment my group and I faced on the journey of creating a casino. The casino night was a complete success. As a dealer I saw first hand the crowd that gathered around the poker tables. My group and I spent about three weeks learning the tricks to poker and solving for almost impossible probabilities. This was one of my favorite sophomore projects.
reflection
10th grade math was defiantly a shock to me and many of my peers; taking on this experimental grading system concerned me at first. I knew it could be easy for students to take advantage of this new system, but I also realized the opportunities it provided. I was able to become creative and fearless in my method for solving problems, and I know I will carry these traits onto any new experience. However, revision is always needed and the area I would spend the most time on is probability. This was the hardest section for me to grasp and understand, but the hardship lead to a greater respect and understanding of the concepts. This year I took on a leadership role in math, and I found that rather than focusing on my leadership skills I should focus on my listening. How can I expect my classmates to trust me if I don't listen? So, I plan to listen and be more compassionate; through these two key points I will be able to help others efficiently.
Everyday in math I felt like a new adventure was about to unfold, but my favorite adventure was the casino night. It allowed me to spark conversations with strangers and play a poker game with them. It was fun and educational.
